Don't be a moron

There’s a brouhaha in the Singapore blogscene (don’t like blogosphere) about bloggers (who happen to be on govt. scholarships) writing racist/defamatory stuff and getting slapped with take-down notices as a result of that. As you can guess, posts about free speech and fascist state and writing sensibly and being sensitive and good deals at Sim Lim were a natural outcome of all that.
Here’s my three bullet points take on the whole situation:
- If you blog, you blog on the World Wide Web! This isn’t a private place for you to exchange views with your buddies! If you are putting up your background online for all to see, then be ready to stand behind what you say and face the consequences of that.
- Be mature in your dealings with others. Just ‘cos you are writing online doesn’t give you the right to be a dick.
- If you see the need for blogging anonymously or if you just want to be a dick, then read EFF’s guide to anonymous blogging.
