Shopping List

Went shopping today with Anshul (thanks!) and bought parts for the new PC. Here's what I got:

  • Intel Pentium D 940 3.2 GHz
  • MSI 945P Neo2-F motherboard
  • Corsair DDR2 667 512MB*2
  • Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB*2 (to be used in RAID-0)
  • Leadtek 7600GS 256MB graphics card
  • BenQ 16X DVD writer
  • Case and a basic Logitech keyboard.

Also ordered the Dell 2007WFP 20" widescreen. They say it'll ship in five to seven days. So now we wait!

Meanwhile, this post is brought to you by Puppy Linux running on a thinkpad without a hard drive! Having a pure RAM system is wonderful. It seems almost magical when you see applications opening instantly. I currently have a graphical desktop, a terminal and Opera with several tabs open - all running out of a pure RAM system - with 100MB of the total 384MB still free!

Update: The new PC, named cellar (I get bonus creativity points), is up and running and humming quite nicely! Check Flickr for some pictures with notes.

awesome configs! I presume you plan to try XGL. Let me know how XGL works with this graphics card.

Puppy Linux sounds interesting. Is it based on Knoppix? BTW I installed DSL on a USB drive sometime back, its very very handy thing to have.

I presume you plan to try XGL. You bet! This 7600 based card should definitely work with nvidia's drivers.

Puppy is Debian derived, I think. But very heavily modified - I don't see similarities to any other distro to tell the truth :-)

It boots from CD and then runs from RAM _freeing up the CD drive_. On shutdown, it writes session changes (config files, installed software, etc) to a file on a USB drive which it picks up when rebooting. Pretty slick and great for the kind of situation I am in!

Unfortunately, I haven't got wireless working with it :( I can do 'iwconfig wlan0 scan' but for some reason, ifconfig can't see that wlan0 interface :(
